The CCA Health Initiative's "Investing in Health" Meetings Program
In December 2009, CCA's Health Initiative launched a new year-long series of breakfast meetings on critical emerging topics for the private sector working in healthcare in Africa. Themed “Investing in Health,” the objective of the series is to identify and advance private sector opportunities in Africa that are both commercially viable and positively impact health. The meetings will feature representatives from industry, multilateral institutions, and the U.S. and African public sectors.
The "Investing in Health" series will allow CCA members and public sector counterparts to discuss the rewards and challenges for increased private sector participation in health systems in Africa. The breakfasts' formats will consist of both high-level keynote speakers and interactive roundtable discussions. Attendees' questions and comments will remain anonymous.
The first convening of the series concentrated on the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases in sub-Saharan Africa and the potential role medical technology can play in mitigating their impact (for more information on this event, click here). The meetings will also examine key issues to be highlighted during CCA's U.S.-Africa Private Sector Health Forum, which will be held in Washington D.C. on October 4-6, 2010. These topics include:
- Technology and innovation for health systems management;
- The Obama administration's approach to public-private partnerships;
- Expanding the African-owned private health sector
- Private sector approaches for health workforce development
- Financing and insurance for health
- Mitigating the prevalence of substandard pharmaceuticals through improved pharmaceutical retail and distribution
