The Liberia Company
BThe Liberia Company was
founded in 1948 by former U.S. Secretary Of
State Edward Stettinius with a diverse group
American and Liberian sponsors and investors.
Early ventures included operation of the Port Of
Monrovia, the ship registry and the financial
institution now known as IB (Liberia) .
Initial projects included Cocoa & Coffee
Plantation crops (COCOPA). The COCOPA
agricultural project was established in Nimba
County (then known as Central Province). After
Stettinius’s death, Juan Trippe, chairman of Pan
American World Airways served as chairman of the
Liberia Company. By 1988, the ownership group
had financed or arranged financing of 7,500
acres of rubber and other agricultural crops.
The War Years
In 1990, rebel and government forces looted the
farm and completed destroyed an OPIC funded,
state-of-the-art factory.
By 1996, the owners were able to reestablish
operations with agents of the government at the
time. All proceeds from the operations were
reinvested including the replanting of approx
1,100 acres of rubber.
Reconstruction
In July 2008, LIBCO hired Harrison Karnwea, the
general manager of COCOPA. Mr. Karnwea was later
appointed minister of interior by President
Sirleaf.
COCOPA Today
The all-Liberian senior administration manages
over 1,000 employees and 100 contractors. The
plantation operates a medical clinic and a 1,600
child school system. Despite the challenges of
the global financial crises local political
challenges, the company planted over 1,500 acres
of new rubber between 2008 and 2010 and upgraded
much of war damaged housing stock and other
social infrastructure.
